Peyton Farquhar a wealthy southern planters stands on single plank of wood off of a bridge in southern Alabama, his arms are tied and a rope encircles his neck. He is surrounded by Federal soldiers all waiting for his hanging to begin. After the soldiers have completed the preparations for the hanging the captain and sergeant switch positions on the plank. Farquhar then closes his eyes to fix his last thoughts upon his wife and children. As he stands on the plank waiting to fall to his death he starts to think about ways he can escape, he believes if he can just free his hands he can take the rope off his neck. The story then bounces back to Farquhar’s house and a Federal scout soldiers stops in and asks for water, the soldiers then goes on the inform the Farquhars about a bridge that the Liberal army has taken. The Soldiers even proceeds to inform Farquhar how easily it would be to destroy the bridge by setting it on fire. The story then jumps back to the hanging with Farquhar falling upon the noose feeling the sharp pain upon his neck and throat and starting to feel the suffocation. Then all at once the pain snaps with the rope breaking he plummets into the water. As he attempts the evade the federal soldiers he dodges gun and cannon shot trying to get down stream and away from the enemies. He continually attempts to return home with the thought of his children urging him on. Upon his final arrival to his home he sees his wife and springs foreword to hug her. As he is about to embrace her he feels a stunning blow to his neck. Farquhar is now dead, his neck broken, and his bod hanging from the Owl Creek Bridge.
