Peyton Farquhar-
35 year old southern plantation owner that is very proslavery and will do anything to help the confederate cause . He grew up in a very wealthy family and is also very wealthy now as we can see by how he's dressed. He couldn't fight in the war but still would do anything to help the confederate cause. He loves his family as you can see because the last thing that he think of is his wife and children.
Farquhar’s Wife-
Although we see little a Farquhar's wife in the story except that she symbolizes a safety and escape for Farquhar. We see this when he return to his home after escaping the hanging the first thing he does is run to hug his wife. We also see she is very for the confederate side as we can see by her eagerness to serve the soldier.
The Federal Scout-
A federal solider who is disguised as a confederate solider who tells Farquhar about the bridge that that the Federal soldiers now occupy. He then goes on to tell Farquhar how the destruction of the bridge would greatly help the confederates cause but anyone caught tampering with the bridge is guaranteed to be hung. He then goes on to describe to Farquhar how anyone could easily set fire to the drift would near the bridge and burn them both down. The federal solider is trying to get Farquhar to go attempt to destroy the bridge knowing confederate troops are waiting there for his capture.
The Sergeant-
Little is knows about the sergeant except he is the overseer of Farquhar’s hanging he stands on the board to support Farquhar’s weigh when he is on the board out over the river before the hanging. He also orders his men to fire at him after he escapes and breaks the rope during the hanging.
