Foreshadowing
-The author starts us off with Farquhar already on the noose making the reader think he is definitely going to die. It then bounces back to the event that lead up to the hanging and we as the reader still believe that Farquhar is going to die. Then as the noose snaps and he falls into the water we see hope that the foreshadowing by the author was for not, until at the end of the story he feels the sharp pain on his neck and the author then tells how he never truly escapes he is now hangs from his noose from Owl Creek Bridge.
Change in Setting
-In many ways the author uses the change in setting to change the readers opinion of what is happening in the story. As the author starts the story with Farquhar being ready to be hung he then goes from their back in time to explain the event that lead up to his hanging. The events then go back to his hanging and when he drops down towards water the noose breaks and he makes his escape. The author then leads the reader to believe he has made his escape and returned home and then at the end of the story snap and the story ends. He never made his escape but was just imagining it the whole time.
