Difference between Appearance and Reality
-The Federal solider disguises himself as confederate solider while really he is fighting for the North and sets Mr. Farquhar up.
-As Farquhar falls onto the noose he imagines that it breaks and he has escaped from the solders swimming deep below the water to avoid their bullets. After evading his captives he reaches home where upon going to his wife to hug her the noose snaps his neck and it goes dark bringing him back to the reality of his hanging.
Masculinity
-Masculinity is a key theme is the entire story because it shows the differences between the men. With Farquhar he takes his death, not whimpering or being upset about how he will die. This masculinity is also contradicted though later in the story as all he wants to do is return home to see his wife and kids. Farquhar masculinity change throughout the story is a key theme.
